What does the remote work market look like today?

The remote work environment is currently in a dynamic phase. At this current moment there is a push and pull battle between companies looking for employees to return to physical offices and the growing demand for remote and hybrid work arrangements from employees. As the initial wave of remote work that swept through many organisations in 2020 subsides, numerous employers are transitioning staff back to the office. Whilst some companies are mandating a full return to the office, others are opting for a hybrid model, requiring employees to be in the office for a few days each week.  Employers cite various reasons for this return to in-person work, including the belief that the office environment enhances employee productivity, the desire for greater control over employee activities, and the importance of fostering a strong company culture. Additionally, companies have made significant investments in corporate real estate and are keen to see a return on these investments.

However, at Removenture we do not believe that the downwards trend will continue long into the future. We envision the remote work employment market taking shape in a pattern resembling the iconic Nike "swoosh" - with a peak, followed by a short decline and a steady increase.

There are a number of reasons that lie behind this belief:

  1. Advances in technology - As technology continues to adapt and evolve, remote working will becoming easier to adopt into everyday working lifestyles. It will become easier to collaborate and communicate with others. Technology can also help with productivity, reducing hours spent on laborious tasks.
  2. Generational change - Younger generations are beginning to assume more senior roles in companies. Due to the nature of life, this is change that is inevitable and cannot be stopped. They are more accustomed to and comfortable with remote working styles, as demonstrated by the increasing number of remote examinations conducted by schools and universities and communicating with family and friends using different remote tools. It is important to note that  the experiences and perspectives of CEO's and other members of senior leadership teams across companies, often built their careers through in-office work.
  3. Accessibility to digital nomad visas - Digital nomad visas empower employees to select their preferred place of residence while working, offering them the flexibility to live in diverse locations around the globe. Today, travel and exploration are increasingly prevalent and with the help of digital nomad visa, remote workers are able to do it, whilst earning an income. This new style of visa also make escaping being tied to one location far more accessible, in some cases you may even end up being able to qualify to live long term in a country you have fallen in love with!
